Daniel Stamm' latest movie The Last Exorcism is a movie written by Huck Botko and Andrew Gurland. It tells the story of a questionable exorcism. It is questionable, since it is not clear if there is a possession or not. The movie is full of plot twists and it keeps the audience guessing until the end which would satisfy a lot of people while disappointing some others. The leading male character Cotton Marcus (portrayed by Patrick Fabian) and he is a preacher who has lost his faith in God for a long time. He cons people by performing fake exorcisms. Cotton Marcus does not believe possessions or demons for that matter, but for one last job he agrees to get his exorcism to be documented by a camera crew which happens to be a one man crew, anyway. He decides to show the behind the scenes of his exorcism tricks, and he randomly picks a family, the Sweetzers, who believe that their daughter Nell Sweetzer (portrayed by Ashley Bell) has been possessed. The problem is that the family is so fundamentalist that they immediately think that the trouble of their daughter cannot be something other than a demonic being possessing her. Cotton Marcus prepares everything and starts the exorcism, but the audience keeps guessing if it is indeed a genuine possession or some other psychological or mental problem. The ending is very interesting, and the movie makers' preference of found footage concept adds to the atmosphere. Patrick Fabian as Cotton Marcus is marvellous. It is nice to see him in a leading role, since he proves to be a brilliant actor in a role which is complicated, difficult and multi dimensional. Ashley Bell as the possessed girl is amazing, as well. It is a duty to inform people that her contorting scenes were not CGIed, she made everything herself and her immediate transformation from the young, innocent and pretty girl to the demonic, wild being deserves a standing ovation. The Last Exorcism is one of the strongest horror movies of the year, combining a smart plot with horror elements in such a way that you would enjoy it whether you believe in possession or not.
